Shubman Gill struck a composed and introspective tone after leading Gujarat Titans to a resounding 77-run victory over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, even though his side delivered one of their most complete performances this season.
Gill, who smashed a brilliant 84 off 44 balls and put on a 118-run opening partnership with Sai Sudharsan, admitted the team is still chasing a “perfect match”. He said: “Yeah, definitely, even before this match, we had a conversation that until now I don’t think we played a perfect game. So very happy. This was a clean win for us.”
Despite Gujarat posting 229/4 before bowling Rajasthan out for 152, Gill insisted there is room for improvement. “I think we ended up with about 10-15 extra runs. We felt there was some help for the spinners in the middle, making it tough to hit sixes or find boundaries,” he explained.
The GT captain also stressed the importance of partnerships and game awareness on a tricky surface. “We thought it was best to keep wickets in hand and bat deep. There was a phase where we didn’t hit a boundary in the 17th and 18th overs, but we covered it well in the last over,” he said.
Gill highlighted the team’s aggressive bowling approach, particularly in the powerplay. “We believe it’s crucial to hold the fort upfront. The only way to contain the opposition is by taking wickets consistently. There’s no other way,” he added.
He also confirmed a minor injury scare during his innings. “I twisted my ankle slightly while taking a run. It was quite painful, but it settled down after about half an hour,” he noted.
With GT now on a four-match winning streak and climbing the standings, Gill emphasized the need for consistency rather than perfection. “Very happy. The next game is at home, and hopefully we can produce another good performance,” he concluded.
